Martas Gallery & Café is the project of two visual artists in Townsville. 'Dumitru Damian-Veliche' (known as 'DiViDe') and Doris Kuenstler. All our passion for the arts in this country and our life-savings as well as copious hours of work and energy has been spent in this project! The idea for the art gallery was conceived through our own need for fair and affordable exhibition opportunities for artists in the region. We are both artists and have experienced the difficulties and high expenses of exhibiting through commercial art galleries in Australia. Most galleries are charging high commission fees (40%) and expect the artists to pay substantial amounts of money for the display of their artworks. Our gallery has been established for the purpose of supporting the artists. It is completely self-funded and is committed to provide free exhibition opportunities as well as low commission fees (30%.) We are aiming to become a meeting and communicating point for artists from all the disciplines. Our comfortable seating area with bar and café will help us provide the funding to sustain the gallery and keep it afloat. We are very excited about the adventure we are going to embark on with this gallery! We are hoping to receive a great and positive response from the community of art-interested people and the artists in this town. Help and support in any form will be happily accepted.
